How Can Jacob Stand?
How Can Jacob Stand?
Tuesday
“This is what the Lord GOD showed me: behold, the Lord GOD was calling for a judgment by fire, and it devoured the great deep and was eating up the land. Then I said, ‘O Lord GOD, please cease! How can Jacob stand? He is so small!’ The LORD relented concerning this: ‘This also shall not be,’ said the Lord GOD.”
— Amos 7:4-6 (ESV)
— Amos 7:4-6 (ESV)
Reflect:
The second vision escalates. Locusts eat the crop; fire consumes the deep itself. The message is that God’s judgment is not a mood — it is a settled response of a holy God to persistent evil. And the second warning is more severe than the first, because mercy delayed is not mercy forever.
But look at the prayer again. It is almost identical to yesterday’s. The prophet does not craft a more sophisticated argument the second time. He returns to the same two facts: God is merciful, and we are small. That is the whole case. Every generation of believers discovers the same thing — we never outgrow the prayer of the beggar.
Some of us have been asking God for the same mercy for years now. The same marriage. The same child. The same besetting sin. And we start to feel embarrassed that our prayers have not become more impressive. Take heart from this text. God did not answer the intercession because it was eloquent. He answered because He is compassionate, and because a man kept coming back.
Yet do not miss the shadow across this passage. Twice God says, “It shall not be.” Only twice. The third vision will bring no such reprieve. There is a real point at which a holy God says, “No more.” Mercy is not the absence of justice — it is the patience of a Judge who has every right to act now and has chosen to wait.

Consider:
Where has God’s patience toward you been mistaken for God’s indifference?
Where has God’s patience toward you been mistaken for God’s indifference?
Pray:
Lord, I confess that I have often presumed on Your patience. I have treated Your delay as approval. Forgive me. Make me quick to repent while today is still called today. In Jesus’ name, amen.
