The Famine No One Expected

“‘Behold, the days are coming,’ declares the Lord GOD, ‘when I will send a famine on the land—not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the LORD. They shall wander from sea to sea, and from north to east; they shall run to and fro, seeking the word of the LORD, but they shall not find it.’”

“And he humbled you and let you hunger and fed you with manna, which you did not know, nor did your fathers know, that he might make you know that man does not live by bread alone, but man lives by every word that comes from the mouth of the LORD.”

The most frightening sentence in this chapter is not “they shall wander.” It is “they shall not find it.” God’s silence is a judgment, and it is a judgment shaped exactly like the sin that earned it: they would not listen, so He stopped speaking. You and I live in an age of astonishing access. Translations, recordings, study tools, a Bible in nearly every drawer. Access is not the same as appetite. Jesus answered the tempter with Scripture because Scripture was what He lived on. What are you living on?
The famine Amos describes was not merely the absence of written words. It was the absence of a word from God that the people could truly hear and receive. They would travel great distances and exhaust themselves in the search, but the voice they had repeatedly dismissed would no longer be available on demand. They wanted God only after they discovered what life without Him felt like.
We should not assume that having several Bibles means we are spiritually well-fed. Bread does not nourish us while it remains in the pantry, and Scripture does not shape us while it remains unopened. We must read it, receive it, meditate upon it, and obey it. Regular time in God’s Word is not a religious box to check. It is the daily confession that we cannot live wisely, faithfully, or fruitfully without hearing from Him.
