From Darkness to Light
From Darkness to Light
Wednesday
for at one time you were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord. Walk as children of light (for the fruit of light is found in all that is good and right and true), and try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord.
— Ephesians 5:8-10 (ESV)
— Ephesians 5:8-10 (ESV)
The contrast Scripture draws is stark: "You were darkness, but now you are light in the Lord." Not "in darkness" but "were darkness." Not "in light" but "are light." This is identity language. Your fundamental nature has changed. You've been transferred from the kingdom of darkness to the kingdom of God's beloved Son.
This wasn't a gradual evolution. It was a supernatural transformation. You didn't improve yourself into light. God spoke light into your darkness just as He spoke light into existence on creation's first day. Christ, who is the light of the world, took up residence in you by His Spirit. You are light because He is light.
Now the text says, "Walk as children of light." Live in alignment with your new nature. The fruit of light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. These qualities grow naturally in someone walking in the light. You don't manufacture them through willpower. They're the organic result of Christ's life flowing through you.
Verse 10 gives you a daily assignment: "Try to discern what is pleasing to the Lord." This requires knowledge of God's Word, sensitivity to God's Spirit, and humility to admit when you're wrong. It's an active, ongoing process of learning to think God's thoughts after Him.

Prayer Focus:
Thank God for transferring you from darkness to light. Ask Him to help you walk in alignment with your new identity today. Pray for wisdom to discern what pleases Him in specific situations you'll face.
