The Mystery of Marriage and the Gospel
Friday
“Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
— Ephesians 5:31-33 (ESV)
Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh.

"This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church." From the very first pages of Scripture, God designed marriage to be a living portrait of the gospel. When a man leaves his father and mother and holds fast to his wife, he is acting out a cosmic drama that points to Jesus Christ leaving the glory of heaven to pursue, redeem, and hold fast to His bride, the church.
This changes everything about how we view marriage. It is not merely a social arrangement or a personal preference. It is a sacred institution designed to put the love of Christ on display. Husbands are called to love sacrificially, as Christ gave Himself for the church. Wives are called to respect and respond with honor, as the church responds to Christ's love.
Whether you are married, single, divorced, or widowed, this truth applies to you because every believer is part of the bride of Christ. The ultimate marriage — the one every earthly marriage points to — is the union of Christ and His church. And that marriage will never fail, never falter, and never end. Jesus paid for His bride with His own blood, and nothing in all creation can separate us from His love.

Reflect:
How does understanding marriage as a picture of Christ and the church change the way you view your own relationships?
How can you better reflect the gospel in your closest relationships this week?
