Fall and Never Rise, or Rise and Never Fall

Three respected religions, three famous destinations, one shared ending: they fall, and never rise again. That is the résumé of every substitute for the living God. It can hold a crowd. It cannot hold a corpse. Then Jesus steps into the frame and says the thing no other god has ever been able to say: I died, and I am alive forevermore. The famine ends where the risen Christ is. He is bread for the hungry and water for the thirsty, and He is not in a tomb.

Amos emphasizes that even the strong and beautiful would faint. Youth, strength, attractiveness, and human potential could not sustain them through a famine of God’s Word. The people had sworn allegiance to impressive religious substitutes, but those substitutes could not supply life when thirst came. Whatever cannot survive the grave cannot be trusted with the weight of your soul.

Jesus offers more than temporary relief. He does not merely give bread; He is the Bread of Life. He does not merely point toward resurrection; He is the risen Lord who possesses the keys of Death and Hades. Every earthly support will eventually weaken, but Christ remains alive forevermore. Those who lean upon Him are not trusting something that might survive. They are trusting the One death has already tested and could not defeat.

Risen Lord Jesus, I have leaned on things that cannot rise. I lean on You. Be my bread and my water today.

Reflect:
Write down the one thing you have most depended on besides Christ. Then write beside it: “falls, and never rises.” Now go tell someone about the One who did.
