Light That Exposes and Transforms

Light That Exposes and Transforms

Thursday

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. But when anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible,
— Ephesians 5:11-13 (ESV)
Scripture's instruction is clear: "Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them." The word "expose" (elenchō) means to bring to light, to convict, to show something for what it really is. Light and darkness can't coexist. Light doesn't tolerate darkness. Light dispels darkness.

But notice verse 13: "When anything is exposed by the light, it becomes visible, for anything that becomes visible is light." This is remarkable. Light doesn't just reveal. Light transforms. When darkness is brought into the light, it loses its power. Secrets kept in darkness maintain their grip on us. Sins hidden in shadows continue to control us. But when we bring them into the light—confess them, expose them to God's Word and God's people—they lose their stranglehold.

This is why community is so important. James 5:16 says, "Confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed." Isolation breeds darkness. Fellowship in the light brings healing and transformation. You're not meant to fight your battles alone.

The works of darkness are "unfruitful"—they produce nothing of lasting value. But the fruit of light is goodness, righteousness, and truth. What are you cultivating in your life? What would change if you exposed every area of your life to the light of God's Word and the fellowship of God's people?
Prayer Focus:
Ask God to search your heart and reveal any area where you're harboring darkness. Pray for courage to bring hidden sins into the light through confession. Thank Him for the transforming power of light that doesn't just expose but heals.
