The Plumb Line

The Plumb Line

Wednesday

“This is what he showed me: behold, the Lord was standing beside a wall built with a plumb line, with a plumb line in his hand. And the LORD said to me, ‘Amos, what do you see?’ And I said, ‘A plumb line.’ Then the Lord said, ‘Behold, I am setting a plumb line in the midst of my people Israel; I will never again pass by them; the high places of Isaac shall be made desolate, and the sanctuaries of Israel shall be laid waste, and I will rise against the house of Jeroboam with the sword.’”
— Amos 7:7-9 (ESV)
Reflect:
A plumb line is a string with a weight tied to the end. Held against a wall, it does not argue, it does not negotiate, and it does not care how much the builder liked his work. Gravity decides. The line simply hangs there, perfectly vertical, and reveals what is true.

That is what God’s standard does. He judges because His standard is perfect. He judges because He is perfectly just. He judges because He sees us as we truly are — not as we present ourselves, not as our friends describe us, not as we have learned to describe ourselves.

Here is the terrifying thing about a leaning wall: from the inside, it looks fine. A wall does not know it is crooked. It only knows the angle it has always been. Israel had drifted so gradually that her tilt felt like normal. She had religion, prosperity, sanctuaries, and a king — everything but a straight line. And the same is true of us. We do not measure our lives against God; we measure them against the person next to us, and we come out looking acceptable.

“For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. And no creature is hidden from his sight, but all are naked and exposed to the eyes of him to whom we must give account.” (Hebrews 4:12-13)

Let God’s Word expose you before His judgment does. That is the mercy available today.
Consider:
Hold the plumb line against one area of your life — your speech, your money, your private habits, your marriage. Where is the lean you have been calling normal?
Pray:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (Psalm 139:23-24) Amen.
