Alone with God, Hastening for God
Alone with God, Hastening for God

"But going ahead to the ship, we set sail for Assos, intending to take Paul aboard there, for so he had arranged, intending himself to go by land. And when he met us at Assos, we took him on board and went to Mitylene. And sailing from there we came the following day opposite Chios; the next day we touched at Samos; and the day after that we went to Miletus. For Paul had decided to sail past Ephesus, so that he might not have to spend time in Asia, for he was hastening to be at Jerusalem, if possible, on the day of Pentecost."
— Acts 20:13-16 (ESV)
"And rising very early in the morning, while it was still dark, he departed and went out to a desolate place, and there he prayed."
— Mark 1:35 (ESV)
"When the day of Pentecost arrived, they were all together in one place."
— Acts 2:1 (ESV)

After an all-night service, the apostle sent the team ahead by ship and walked about twenty miles alone. We aren't told why, but many believe he needed time with God. Jesus did the same. Even in seasons of overwhelming ministry, He rose before dawn to pray.
Teamwork and solitude are not enemies. The people who serve best together are often the people who have been alone with God. Prayer fills what ministry empties.
Then notice the urgency. He was "hastening" to reach Jerusalem by Pentecost, when crowds from many nations would be there, the same feast when the Holy Spirit had first been poured out on the church. Time alone with God didn't make him passive; it gave him purpose.
As this week ends, ask God for both: quiet time with Him, and a renewed sense of mission with His people. The same Jesus who meets you in the quiet sends you out with the team.

Reflect:
Where is your "road to Assos" this weekend, a time and place to be alone with God? What mission is He hastening you toward?

Pray:
Father, draw me near to You in quiet places, and send me out with Your people on mission. Fill me with Your Spirit for the work ahead. Amen.
