The Only Way

The Only Way

Thursday

"Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.'"
— John 14:6 (ESV)

"And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved."
— Acts 4:12 (ESV)

"For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast."

— Ephesians 2:8-9 (ESV)

Reflect:
Twice in Acts 19, the Christian faith is simply called "the Way" (vv. 9, 23). That name came from the lips of Jesus, who did not claim to be a way but the Way. That claim is what made the gospel so disruptive in Ephesus. If Jesus is the only Way to the Father, then Artemis is not a way at all, and neither is any other idol, religion, or self-made path.

Our culture often considers this claim narrow or unkind. But imagine being lost in a burning building. The firefighter who says, "There is only one way out, follow me," is not being unkind. He is saving your life. The exclusivity of Jesus is an act of love.

And this Way is not earned. Ephesians 2:8–9, written to the very church that grew out of this city, reminds us that salvation is by grace, through faith, and not by works. The silversmiths sold shrines. Jesus offers Himself freely, having paid the price of our sin on the cross and risen again to give us life.
Respond:
Is there anyone you know who is trying to find God on another road? Pray for them by name today.
Pray:
Lord Jesus, thank You for being the Way, the Truth, and the Life. Thank You that salvation is a gift of grace. Give me courage and compassion to point others to You. Amen.
