The Root of All Kinds of Evil

The Root of All Kinds of Evil

Wednesday

"But godliness with contentment is great gain, for we brought nothing into the world, and we cannot take anything out of the world. But if we have food and clothing, with these we will be content. But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation, into a snare, into many senseless and harmful desires that plunge people into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. It is through this craving that some have wandered away from the faith and pierced themselves with many pangs."
— 1 Timothy 6:6-10 (ESV)

"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other, or he will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve God and money."
— Matthew 6:24 (ESV)

"Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said, 'I will never leave you nor forsake you.'"

— Hebrews 13:5 (ESV)

Reflect:
The riot in Ephesus did not begin with theology. It began with a wallet. Demetrius saw his income shrinking, and suddenly the goddess needed defending. This is how the love of money corrupts religion: it turns worship into a transaction and turns faith into a business to be protected.

Notice that Scripture does not say money is the root of all evils, but that the love of money is a root of all kinds of evils. Money is a tool; love of money is a master. Jesus was clear that we cannot serve both. Every heart has a throne, and only one can sit on it.

The cure is not simply having less, but being content with what God provides. Hebrews 13:5 grounds contentment in a promise: "I will never leave you nor forsake you." When God Himself is our treasure, we can hold everything else with open hands. Demetrius feared losing his wealth. The believer who has Christ can never lose what matters most.
Respond:
Honestly consider: when your finances are threatened, what emotions rise up first? Anger, fear, or trust? What does that reveal about who is on the throne?
Pray:
Father, free me from the love of money. Teach me the great gain of godliness with contentment, and help me rest in Your promise never to leave me. Amen.
