The Divine "Must"

The Divine "Must"

Monday

"Now after these events Paul resolved in the Spirit to pass through Macedonia and Achaia and go to Jerusalem, saying, 'After I have been there, I must also see Rome.'"
— Acts 19:21 (ESV)

"I do not want you to be unaware, brothers, that I have often intended to come to you (but thus far have been prevented), in order that I may reap some harvest among you as well as among the rest of the Gentiles."
— Romans 1:13 (ESV)

"The following night the Lord stood by him and said, 'Take courage, for as you have testified to the facts about me in Jerusalem, so you must testify also in Rome.'"
— Acts 23:11 (ESV)
Reflect:
The apostle had a holy restlessness. After three fruitful years in Ephesus, he did not settle in and enjoy the success. His eyes were on Rome, the center of the ancient world, because he longed to see a harvest of souls there. Romans 1:13 shows this was not a passing thought. He had "often intended" to come, but had been "prevented." Delays did not cancel the desire.

Notice how the "must" of Acts 19:21 is echoed by the Lord Himself in Acts 23:11. What began as a Spirit-led resolve was confirmed by God's own promise. The road to Rome would include a riot, an arrest, trials, and a shipwreck, but it would arrive. God's purposes are never thwarted by detours.

Perhaps you have a God-given burden that seems stalled. Maybe it is a loved one you are praying for, a ministry you sense God calling you toward, or a change you know He wants to make in you. "Thus far prevented" does not mean "forever prevented." The God who sets the "must" also sets the timing.
Respond:
What burden has God placed on your heart that you have been tempted to abandon because of delay? Write it down and commit it to Him again today.
Pray:
Lord, give me a heart that longs for the harvest. When my plans are delayed, help me trust that Your purposes will stand and Your timing is perfect. In Jesus' name, amen.
