We aren't told the details of the vow at Cenchreae, but we do know the heart behind the one who took it. Believers living under the grace of Christ are not bound to take vows, yet here was a man willing to embrace an old custom if it might help open a door for the gospel. That is what grace-filled freedom looks like. Our culture tends to define freedom as the right to do whatever we want. Scripture defines it differently: freedom is the release from sin's slavery so that we can serve God and others in love. Sometimes that means setting aside a preference, adjusting a habit, or stepping into an uncomfortable situation for the sake of someone who needs Jesus. The message never changes, but our methods can bend in love.
