When the Heart Goes Hard
When the Heart Goes Hard
Thursday
“Then Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent to Jeroboam king of Israel, saying, ‘Amos has conspired against you in the midst of the house of Israel. The land is not able to bear all his words. For thus Amos has said, “Jeroboam shall die by the sword, and Israel must go into exile away from his land.”’ And Amaziah said to Amos, ‘O seer, go, flee away to the land of Judah, and eat bread there, and prophesy there, but never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king’s sanctuary, and it is a temple of the kingdom.’”
— Amos 7:10-13 (ESV)
— Amos 7:10-13 (ESV)
Reflect:
Watch how a hardened heart defends itself. Amaziah never once asks whether the message is true. He goes straight to the king, twists the words, and then tells the messenger to leave town and go get paid somewhere else. Prideful eyes that refuse to look at the lowly. A mocking mouth — “O seer” — that refuses to honor righteousness. A hardened heart that refuses to respond to the Word of God.
And notice the reason he gives: “it is the king’s sanctuary.” He calls it a place of worship, but he defends it as a place of politics. He is protecting a religious institution that has become a career. That is the most dangerous condition a person can be in — close enough to God’s things to be comfortable, far enough from God’s Word to be untouched.
The danger is not a single act of sin. It is a life so accustomed to rebellion that it no longer calls rebellion “sin.”
“Take care, brothers, lest there be in any of you an evil, unbelieving heart, leading you to fall away from the living God. But exhort one another every day, as long as it is called ‘today,’ that none of you may be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin. For we have come to share in Christ, if indeed we hold our original confidence firm to the end. As it is said, ‘Today, if you hear his voice, do not harden your hearts as in the rebellion.’” (Hebrews 3:12-15)
Hardening is not usually a decision. It is a deceit. It happens slowly, in the space between conviction and obedience, and it always feels reasonable while it is happening.

Consider:
When was the last time you felt genuinely convicted — and what did you do with it? Who in your life has permission to say the hard thing to you?

Pray:
Lord Jesus, keep my heart tender. Do not let me become a person who manages religion while resisting You. Give me one honest friend and the humility to listen. Amen.
