The Only Security That Holds

Consider:
Amos exposes Israel’s false securities: geography, prosperity, luxury, military strength, social position, and human achievement. Every one of them failed because none could deal with the people’s deepest problem—their sin before a holy God.

Our securities are different in appearance but not in substance. Money can pay a bill, but it cannot erase guilt. Medicine can extend life, but it cannot defeat death forever. A respected reputation may impress other people, but it cannot survive God’s perfect judgment. Religious activity may make us appear moral, but it cannot reconcile us to God.
We need a refuge greater than anything we can build.

That refuge is Jesus Christ. On the cross, Jesus bore the judgment our sin deserved. He died in the place of sinners and rose bodily and victoriously on the third day. Everyone who turns from sin and trusts in Him is forgiven, declared righteous, and brought into peace with God.

Romans 5:1 does not say that we achieve peace with God through our performance. It says we have been “justified by faith.” To be justified means to be declared righteous before God. The believer’s standing rests not upon personal goodness but upon the perfect righteousness and finished work of Christ.

The five solas of the Reformation summarize this saving truth:

1. Scripture alone: God’s Word is our final authority and reveals the saving gospel.
2. Grace alone: Salvation is God’s undeserved gift, not a reward we earn.
3. Faith alone: We receive Christ by trusting Him, not by presenting our achievements.
4. Christ alone: Jesus is the only sufficient Savior and Mediator between God and sinners.
5. To the glory of God alone: From beginning to end, salvation displays God’s mercy, power, and glory.

The Christian’s security is not that nothing painful will happen. It is that nothing can separate us from the love of God in Christ. Our bodies may weaken and earthly comforts may disappear, but Christ has dealt with our sin, conquered death, and secured our eternal inheritance.

So where have you built your own Zion? Have you prepared carefully for retirement but neglected eternity? Have you insured your possessions while leaving your soul exposed before God? Amos strips away counterfeit refuges so that we will run to the one refuge that holds.

Leave every false security at the cross. Rest your full confidence in Jesus Christ.

Respond:
Slowly repeat Psalm 20:7, emphasizing the words “we trust.” Then thank God for each of the five solas and for the assurance that your salvation rests in Christ rather than in your performance.

Pray:
Lord Jesus, You are the only foundation that holds. I confess that I have trusted temporary things and attempted to find security in what I possess, accomplish, or control. Thank You for bearing the judgment my sin deserved and for rising victoriously from the grave. Thank You that salvation is revealed in Scripture alone, given by grace alone, received through faith alone, found in Christ alone, and accomplished for the glory of God alone. Strip away every counterfeit refuge and teach me to rest in Your finished work. Whatever may change around me, keep my heart anchored in You. Amen.
