Stop the Story Before it Spreads

Stop the Story Before it Spreads

Wednesday

“If one gives an answer before he hears, it is his folly and shame.”
— Proverbs 18:13 (ESV)

Paul's accusers saw Trophimus with him in the city and assumed he had brought him into the temple. They supplied missing facts with imagination. An assumption became an accusation, then a riot.

Our words can damage friendships and reputations, too. Today's proverb calls us to listen before answering. We may not know the whole story. Before sharing, ask: What do I actually know? Does this person need the information? Will speaking help? A gentle question can interrupt gossip. When harm requires help, seek someone who can respond responsibly. Love protects people and pursues truth.

If you have repeated something unfair, confess it to Jesus, correct it, and apologize where appropriate. So here is your assignment this week: before you repeat anything about anyone, take it to Jesus first, then to that person directly. Kill one rumor. Let the story stop with you. Your restraint can protect someone else's name today.
Pause & Reflect:
Have you confused something you suspect with something you know? Is there a conversation you need to stop, a statement you need to correct, or a person you need to approach humbly?
Put it Into Practice:
Refuse to forward one unverified claim today. If you have already spread it, contact those who heard it and make a clear correction. Pray before addressing the person involved, and listen carefully.
Pray:
Father, forgive my careless speech and my eagerness to believe the worst. Help me listen patiently and distinguish facts from assumptions. Give me courage to stop gossip without becoming harsh or self-righteous. Where I have harmed someone, help me make it right. Protect our families and our church from words that divide. Make my tongue an instrument of truth, encouragement, and peace. In Jesus' name, amen.
