Saved For: Good Works Prepared in Advance

Friday

"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them."
— Ephesians 2:10 (ESV)
After demolishing works-based salvation, Paul immediately reclaims works in their proper place. We are not saved by good works, but we are saved for good works. The order matters eternally.

"Workmanship" translates the Greek word poiema, from which we get "poem." You are God's poem, His masterpiece, His creative expression. Just as a poem carries the signature style of its author, your life is meant to display God's artistry. He didn't save you to hide you on a shelf but to put you on display.

But here's the astonishing part: the good works aren't your invention. God "prepared them beforehand." Before you were born, before creation itself, God designed specific acts of service, kindness, and love for you to walk in. Your calling isn't random. Your opportunities aren't accidents. The people you'll meet, the needs you'll address, the impact you'll have—all prepared in advance by a sovereign, loving Father.

"Walk in them" suggests a lifestyle, not isolated events. These good works aren't occasional heroics but daily rhythms. They're the neighbor you encourage, the coworker you serve, the child you disciple, the stranger you notice. God has prepared a path of purpose. Your job isn't to create it—just to walk in it.
1. What good works might God have prepared specifically for you in this season of life?
2. How does knowing you are God's "workmanship" change how you view yourself?
3. What steps can you take today to be more attentive to the path God has prepared for you?
Creator God, thank You for making me Your masterpiece. I don't always feel like a work of art, but You see what I'm becoming. Open my eyes today to the good works You've prepared. Give me courage to walk in them and humility to remember they bring You glory, not me. May my life be a poem that points others to its Author. In Jesus' name, Amen.
