The Profound Mystery

The Profound Mystery

Thursday

For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as Christ does the church, because we are members of his body. “Therefore a man shall leave his father and mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.” This mystery is profound, and I am saying that it refers to Christ and the church. However, let each one of you love his wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.
— Ephesians 5:29-33 (ESV)
The text calls marriage a “profound mystery” and then reveals that it refers to Christ and the church. Every marriage between a believing husband and wife is intended to be a living display of the gospel. When a husband nourishes and cherishes his wife, the world gets a glimpse of how Jesus cares for His people. When a wife respects and follows her husband’s lead, the world sees the church’s joyful devotion to her Lord. This is staggering—God designed marriage not merely for companionship or procreation, but as a stage on which the greatest love story in history is performed.

Today, meditate on the wonder that your earthly relationships are meant to point people to an eternal reality. Ask God to make your closest relationships a witness to His grace.
Prayer:
Lord, open my eyes to see the mystery of the gospel woven into the fabric of marriage. Let my relationships display Your glory to the world. Amen.
