Gathered on the First Day

Gathered on the First Day

Thursday

"On the first day of the week, when we were gathered together to break bread, Paul talked with them, intending to depart on the next day, and he prolonged his speech until midnight. There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered. And a young man named Eutychus, sitting at the window, sank into a deep sleep as Paul talked still longer. And being overcome by sleep, he fell down from the third story and was taken up dead. But Paul went down and bent over him, and taking him in his arms, said, 'Do not be alarmed, for his life is in him.' And when Paul had gone up and had broken bread and eaten, he conversed with them a long while, until daybreak, and so departed. And they took the youth away alive, and were not a little comforted."
— Acts 20:7-12 (ESV)

"And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'"
— Luke 22:19 (ESV)

"Jesus said to her, 'I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die. Do you believe this?'"
— John 11:25-26 (ESV)

The early church gathered on Sunday because that was the day Jesus walked out of the tomb. Every Lord's Day was a little Easter. They broke bread to remember His body given for them, and they listened to the Word late into the night.

Then tragedy struck. Eutychus fell and died. But the God who raised Jesus raised this young man, and the church went home "not a little comforted." What began as a worship service ended as a living picture of the gospel: death interrupted by resurrection life.

Gathered worship is not an add-on to the Christian life. It's where we hear the Word together, remember the cross together, and are reminded together that death doesn't get the last word. When you feel tempted to skip, remember that your presence encourages others, and theirs encourages you.
Reflect:
How do you prepare your heart for Sunday worship? What could you change this Saturday night to come to worship more rested and expectant?
Pray:
Lord Jesus, You are the resurrection and the life. Make me hungry for Your Word and faithful to gather with Your people. Amen.
