God Rules Over the Uproar

God Rules Over the Uproar

Friday

"But when Paul wished to go in among the crowd, the disciples would not let him. And even some of the Asiarchs, who were friends of his, sent to him and were urging him not to venture into the theater."
— Acts 19:30-31 (ESV)

"And when the town clerk had quieted the crowd, he said, 'Men of Ephesus, who is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is temple keeper of the great Artemis, and of the sacred stone that fell from the sky? Seeing then that these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rash.'"
— Acts 19:35-36 (ESV)

"'For we really are in danger of being charged with rioting today, since there is no cause that we can give to justify this commotion.' And when he had said these things, he dismissed the assembly."
— Acts 19:40-41 (ESV)

"The king's heart is a stream of water in the hand of the LORD; he turns it wherever he will."
— Proverbs 21:1 (ESV)

"For they themselves report concerning us the kind of reception we had among you, and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God, and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come."

— 1 Thessalonians 1:9–10 (ESV)

Reflect:
Twenty-five thousand people were shouting in a theater, and yet heaven was not nervous. God used fellow believers to hold back a bold apostle. He used wealthy provincial officials, the Asiarchs, as friends who sent a warning. He used a pagan town clerk to calm the mob and to declare the Christians innocent. Proverbs 21:1 says even a king's heart is like a stream in the Lord's hand.

Whatever uproar is swirling around you this week, whether at work, in your family, or in the news, God has not left the room. He can use the most unlikely people to protect His purposes and His people.

The best response to a noisy world is a quiet, settled faith. The Thessalonians "turned to God from idols," and they waited for His Son from heaven. Idols make noise; the living God keeps His promises.
Respond:
What "uproar" are you facing right now? Take a few minutes of silence and hand it over to the God who rules over every crowd.
Pray:
Sovereign Lord, I trust You with the chaos around me. Thank You that You are in control and that Jesus, who was raised from the dead, will return. Keep me faithful until He comes. Amen.
