Freed From What The Law Could Not Free
Freed From What The Law Could Not Free
Thursday
"Let it be known to you therefore, brothers, that through this man forgiveness of sins is proclaimed to you, and by him everyone who believes is freed from everything from which you could not be freed by the law of Moses."
— Acts 13:38-39 (ESV)
"Now, therefore, why are you putting God to the test by placing a yoke on the neck of the disciples that neither our fathers nor we have been able to bear? But we believe that we will be saved through the grace of the Lord Jesus, just as they will."
— Acts 15:10-11 (ESV)

Reflect:
These two passages are the theological heart of the whole book. Everything from the ascension to Athens exists to get this message to human ears.
Read that first sentence again slowly: "everyone who believes is freed from everything." Not some who believe. Not freed from some things. The law of Moses was never able to do this. It could diagnose the disease with perfect accuracy, but it could not cure it. It was a mirror, not a shower.
Then look at the word "yoke" in chapter fifteen. Adding requirements to grace is not a higher standard; it is a heavier burden that no generation has ever managed to carry. If you are exhausted in your faith right now, examine whether you are living under grace or under a yoke you have quietly strapped onto yourself.
Jesus died the death our sin earned and rose to prove the payment was accepted. We are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.

Pray:
Lord Jesus, thank You that You did for me what no law and no effort of mine ever could. Take off every yoke I have strapped on myself. Let me rest in Your finished work today. Amen.

One Question to Carry:
What am I still secretly trying to add to the cross in order to feel acceptable to God?
