When the Lion Roars

Jul 12, 2026    Pastor Greg Wagoner

What if the very thing you counted on for safety was actually your summons to stand before God? In this message from Amos chapter 3, we encounter a prophet sent to a prosperous, comfortable people who had mistaken God’s favor for God’s silence — and discovered that being chosen by God is not a pillow to rest on, but a platform of responsibility. Through a haunting series of questions and the image of a roaring lion, the text confronts us with a God who is never absent, never asleep, and never indifferent to injustice.

Yet even as the lion roars in judgment, mercy is never entirely absent. A shepherd reaches into the predator’s mouth to rescue a remnant — a picture that points us straight to the cross, where Jesus Christ absorbed the full weight of God’s justice and rose again in glorious resurrection. Here we are reminded that we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone.

Whether you are a longtime believer or simply curious, this message invites you to stop walking past the roar, to abandon the false refuges that always crumble, and to find lasting security in the one altar that can never be cut off. Listen, share, and be encouraged to return to the God who warns because He loves.
