When God Roars

Jun 28, 2026    Pastor Greg Wagoner

In this message from Amos 1, Pastor Greg opens one of the most overlooked books of the Old Testament and finds a God who is anything but silent. Beginning with the declaration that "The LORD roars from Zion," we discover that the God of the Bible is a God of universal accountability — watching the nations, naming their sins, and bringing His justice to bear on the violence, slave trafficking, broken covenants, and sustained hatred that define so much of our world. Drawing on the carefully crafted literary structure of Amos's eight oracles, this message reveals that God's patience is always purposeful and that His justice is always exact. This is not a polite or comfortable passage — and that is precisely why we need it.

But the message does not leave us under the roar. It moves with urgency to the cross of Jesus Christ — the place where the fire of divine justice that all of us deserve was poured out on the Son of God in our place. The Scriptures declare that we are justified by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, to the glory of God alone. Because of the death and resurrection of Jesus, the God who roars over sin is the same God who redeems the sinner. Whether you are new to the faith or have followed Jesus for decades, this message from Amos is a call to renewed awe at God's holiness, fresh gratitude for the Gospel, and courageous engagement with the injustices of our day. Come ready to hear from a God who has not gone quiet.
