What Kind of King is Jesus?
On Palm Sunday, crowds waved branches and shouted "Hosanna" as Jesus rode into Jerusalem. But what kind of King were they cheering for? In this powerful message from Zechariah 9:9-13, we discover that Jesus is not the kind of King the world expected—He is far greater. Through the prophet Zechariah's ancient words, we see four dimensions of Christ's kingship: He is a Humble King who chose a borrowed donkey over a war horse; a Peacemaking King who dismantles weapons and speaks reconciliation to the nations; a Redeeming King who pays the ransom for prisoners trapped in waterless pits; and a Sending King who transforms His people into arrows aimed at a hurting world.
This sermon confronts us with the same question that faced the Palm Sunday crowd: Do we truly believe in the kind of King Jesus actually is? Within five days of that triumphant entry, many who shouted "Hosanna" would cry "Crucify." They wanted a political revolutionary; Jesus came as a suffering servant. They expected military conquest; He offered sacrificial love. Yet through His death on the cross and glorious resurrection, Jesus accomplished what no earthly king could ever do—He conquered sin and death itself.
